The Department of History and Civilization at the European University
Institute (EUI) has now opened applications for its Doctoral Programme. The
deadline for the academic year 2015/2016 is the 31 January 2015.

Located in Florence, Italy, the EUI has one of the world’s largest
doctoral and postdoctoral programmes in the social sciences. The four
Departments - Economics, History and Civilization, Law and Social and
Political Sciences - and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies
host more than 1000 scholars from over 60 countries.

The EUI offers up to 160 fully-funded Ph.D. grants. The grants are
available for nationals of most EU member states. A limited number of EUI
Special Doctoral grants are available for nationals of states that have not
signed the EUI Convention.

The Department of History and Civilization offers a distinctive programme
of transnational and comparative European history in a global perspective.
Study and research activities are structured in a four-year Ph.D.
programme. The teaching programme for the Ph.D. in History and Civilization
includes departmental, training and research seminars, as well as other
activities such as conferences, workshops, and lectures. The Department
pursues a variety of research projects in Imperial, Colonial and Global
History, Gender History, Economic History, Intellectual History,
Comparative and Transnational History, and the History of Science from the
15th to the 20th century. The Department has several exchange programmes
with top universities in Europe and the United States, and supports the
need of researchers in terms of field-work, archival missions, and
conference travels.

Research at the Institute is supported by a first class Library in the
Social Sciences, and a team of experienced librarians and information
specialists. A Language Centre provides free language training for
researchers in English, Italian, French, Spanish, and German.
