The University of Oxford seeks to appoint an outstanding candidate to the Professorship of the History of Science in the Faculty of History from 1 October 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Professor will share the Faculty's vision of the scope of the history of science, which is less focussed on the history of scientific truth and more interested in reconstructing the practices of science, and the claims to science-based authority within given societies at given times. The successful candidate will be a historian of international reputation with an outstanding research and publications record in any area or period of the history of science, excluding the ancient world and the history of medicine, as well as the ability to teach an inspire students at all levels and to undertake senior administrative duties. She or he will have the ability to capitalise on the history of scientific research at Oxford, encouraging interaction and collaboration with other disciplines and particularly with the University's Museum of the History of Science. The post has a significant public role, and the new Professor will be expected to promote the study of the history of science in Oxford, and to stimulate interest in the subject within the broader academic community, and the general public at large. The Professorship is held in the Faculty of History and the appointee will be a Professorial Fellow of Linacre College. Start date: 1 October 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. Deadline for applications: Monday 13 April 2015. For more details about the post and full application instructions, see http://www.ox.ac.uk/about_the_university/jobs/fp/. Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford. Committed to equality and valuing diversity
