The Making and Knowing Project seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar, to start July
1,
2016.

In 2016-17, the Making and Knowing postdoctoral scholar will co-teach the
laboratory
seminar each semester with Professor Pamela Smith and postdoctoral scholars
Donna
Bilak and Joel Klein, and take part in all activities of the Making and
Knowing Project.
In addition, the scholar will act as a liaison to the Chemical Heritage
Foundation (CHF)
for the entire year, which will allow the scholar both to pursue his or her
own research in
conjunction with an appropriate project for the Chemical Heritage
Foundation. If the
scholar is appointed for a further two years, he or she will co-teach the
laboratory seminar
each semester, take part in Making and Knowing Project activities, and,
instead of the
CHF role, he or she will teach one section of the Introduction to
Contemporary
Civilization, a central part of Columbia’s signature Core Curriculum.
Core teaching
requires instructors to attend Core Curriculum weekly preceptor meetings
and lectures (in
these years of the postdoctoral position, the Scholar will hold the
additional title of
Lecturer in History).

Eligibility Requirements: A PhD, preferably in history or a cognate
discipline (such as
art history, conservation, or history of sciences). Some experience in
laboratory,
conservation, or studio work, a knowledge of French language and history,
and digital
skills will be beneficial. Candidates must hold the doctoral degree by July
1, 2016 or
have received it within the previous three years.

The appointment start date will be July 1, 2016. Renewal for a second and
third year will
be contingent upon satisfactory performance. Starting salary will be over
$50,000, plus
benefits, and a research stipend.
