One two-year post-doctoral position 

for cataloguing Arabic Ptolemaic manuscripts 

 

The Project Ptolemaeus Arabus et Latinus (PAL) is dedicated to the edition
and 
study of the Arabic and Latin versions of PtolemyÕs astronomical and
astrological texts 
and related material. These include works by Ptolemy or attributed to him, 
commentaries thereupon and other works that are of immediate relevance to 
understanding PtolemyÕs heritage in the Middle Ages and the early modern
period up to 
1700 A.D. 

 
The Project is hosted by the Bavarian Academy of Science and Humanities in
Munich 
for a period of 25 years from 2013 to 2037. It is supervised by Prof. Dr.
Dag Nikolaus 
Hasse (University of W?rzburg) and carried out by five scholars, namely two
research 
leaders, Dr. David Juste and Dr. Benno van Dalen, two post-doctoral
researchers and 
one doctoral student. 

 

Applications are open for one post-doctoral position (no age limit): 

 

. One full-time position for a period of 2 years, with possible extension
pending 
positive evaluation and budget leeway. The position is expected to commence
on 1 
January 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter. 
. The monthly salary range is Û 3904-5076 liable to deductions for tax,
social security 
benefits and retirement provisions. The salary will be dependent on
relevant 
academic experience (German pay scale TV-L E13). 
. The postdoctoral researcher will have office facilities at the Bavarian
Academy of 
Science and Humanities in Munich, together with the other Project members,
and 
is in principle expected to work there full time. The contract will be with
the 
University of W?rzburg. 


 

. Qualifications and skills: applicants must hold a PhD in an area relevant
to the 
Project, have an excellent knowledge of Arabic philology as well as
experience with 
Arabic manuscripts, an excellent command of written and spoken English (the

primary language of the Project) and, preferably, research experience in
line with 
PAL objectives, in particular in the history of science. 
. The main task of the successful candidate will be to complete the
catalogue of 
Arabic Ptolemaic manuscripts, on the basis of the material assembled and
the work 
already done by Dr. Mar?a Jos? Parra P?rez between 2013 and 2016. 
. The successful candidate is expected to be an active member of the
research team 
and to take part in the various aspects of the Project. Two typical tasks
associated 
with this position are (1) ordering reproductions of Arabic manuscripts
that are still missing from the ProjectÕs collection (this collection
currently includes c. 200 
Arabic Ptolemaic manuscripts) and (2) transcribing Arabic Ptolemaic texts
and 
doing preparatory work towards a critical edition of these texts (see
Project Outline, 
¤4.2). These two additional tasks are expected to take up no more than 20%
of the 
working time of the postdoctoral researcher. 
. The successful candidate agrees to publish the catalogue in the PAL book
series 
and on the PAL web interface. All contributions by members of the research
team 
are published under their own name and authorship is duly acknowledged in
every 
collaborative output, including online publications.
