Centre Emile Durkheim, UMR5116, Bordeaux, France. The project: The multidisciplinary ANR project "Anthropo-Phages" is a multi-sited ethnography of the development of a biomedical innovation. Bacteriophage viruses (or phages) are viruses that specifically attack bacteria and are safe for humans. They are entities found everywhere in the environment. They were discovered in 1917, and used early in human therapy to treat bacterial infections, but were abandoned in the 1940s in favour of antibiotics and other chemical antimicrobials such as sulfamides. Due to the rise in bacterial resistance to antibiotics and antimicrobials in general, there has been a renewed interest in the potential applications of bacteriophage viruses in the fields of human, animal and environmental health.? This project is based on an interdisciplinary approach combining STS, environmental anthropology, socio- anthropology of law and economics, history of science and medicine, microbiology, ecology and medicine. The main objective is to analyse the development of this innovation as well as the various scientific, economic, legal and cultural obstacles it faces. The candidate will hold a PhD in history or philosophy of science and/or medicine. S/he will develop her/his project around the differential history of phages (which are at the basis of the development of molecular biology) and phage therapy. S/he must be able to work independently while integrating into the team. S/he will participate in project activities, including participation in seminars, workshops and conferences. S/he will be in charge of organizing (with the PI) a workshop on the conceptual and practical renewals brought by phage therapy.
